SAY WHAT - FASHED

-
Fashion editorial work by Say What studio. As you can see a monotone print process has been utilised throughout the design work, applying it thoroughly across both type and image. More importantly it features an appropriate use of blackletter type. Relating it directly with photographs and concept behind them. Looking in the gothic and grotesque trend that has taken a leap over this year or so. Overall nice work indeed.

Duncan X

-
Found this guy through the book I bought earlier in the year 'Forever: The New Tattoo' and instantly felt amazed by his technique, and practice. He's not one of them boring tattoo artists, that regurgitates the same old stuff again and again. Instead he utilises his own style within his work, focussing on black and white, shading and line work. This allows a much more impressive overall outlook to his designs. A master craftsman.

GIVE UP

-
This guys work speaks DIY all over, taking his artwork himself onto the streets, getting around and working hard to develop his skill set and passion. What I like the most about his work is the limited colour pallet in which he utilises across a broad range of products, creating a dark but direct relation to the audience it is designed for. Again someone who uses blackletter, what I think correctly. Using it within a context that dominates this as a significant element of design.

Vberkvlt

-
Album artwork, layout and printing processes by Vberkvlt. What I particularly find appealing about his work is the morbid application in which he directly influences within his direction. Blackletter and visual logo work can be seen as a direct relation to the band and sub-culture revolving around his work. Images of demonic reference, associated with being evil is something that the sub-culture takes on board without any questions.

NATVRES MORTES ILLVSTRATION

-
Automatically you know this guys work relates to all things evil, and everything supporting my metal & hardcore music. The sub-culture has been effectively sub-merged within his design work / illustration work. Utilising products within the context. Black and white is always effective when creating work for this type or music / people involved. Skulls can be seen across his work, an image of death consistently relating to the genre.

LYRICS

The Many Faces of Oliver Hart

" These songs ain't me, they're just documentations of momentary thoughts
Nothing's set in stone just because it's sold of bought "

" No matter what side you see it's only one side
No matter how much you think it means, it's just one side "

Step By Step

" It seems like hours went by and I'm still travelling
Right towards the brightness
Now this ain't even heaven or hell
This realm is lifeless "

" I was never good a problem solving, especially in emergencies
I get a tad bit nervous when concerned with burning for an eternity "

" Ya, know I'm saying ...
Kinda just turned around from the whole situation ...
Rejecting everything that was going on ...
That's how I walked into heaven "

Infared Roses

" I just wish I could've stopped to cherish the moment while it lasted but
maybe that's not the point, the second your smart enough to recognise freedom
you're no longer free "

" It's that split second in life where you actually feel alive
and until the end of time, we chase the memory of that
hoping the future holds something better than the past
so why do I spend my time runnin' away ? "

" I can waste my energy tryin' to reproduce something that's gone
but my childhood is dead, it's time to move on "

was inevitable "

" That solace piece of metal was the boss in the relationship, he
bought it to keep him safe but it just made him sick "

she likes to talk directly down the barrel of her gun "

" The grass is always greener on the other pesticide
solemn precious crept through the mess to shed it's infectious high"

Aelxander Kostenko

-

Absolutely love this guys work, there is something about the detail of line work captured in each of his illustrations that leave me sitting and staring at them for a while. Even if you took away the colour, they would still stand out as effective images for the purpose they have been created. What's more interested is the selected images below have been created for a hip-hop collective in russia. Each depicting a different message from the album. An inspiration to say the least.

Ewa Mos

-
What I particularly like about Ewa Mos's work is the mixed media approach he uses with some of the work he has done. Incorporating illustration over photography, manipulating the captured images into something more aesthetically appealing. Also the artwork created for a band almost tells a story, probably relating directly to the sound of the band, and overall what they have to say collectively.

Funeral French

-
Funeral French utilises his interested and creative abilities together, creating pieces of work for hardcore punk bands / metal bands. There is eerie, almost tragic atmosphere within his imagery and choice of type, creating a direct relation to the band itself. As you can see his type work also reflects his illustrations used within, taking this into account I can see how his design work, works.

David D'Andrea

-
What I particularly like about this artists work is his ability to create such intense detail, within line work and colour application. The overall grimy, grittiness to his illustrations create a dark relation automatically to the context. Incorporating type and image together effectively allows, an understanding between the audience and whomever may stumble across these amazing pieces of illustration.

-

Sin-Eater

-
Sin Eater definitely has a profound style with his overall approach to creating pieces of artwork. Creating intricate medieval illustrations alongside black letter typefaces. With this I think it balances out extremely effectively, as it allows his artwork to narrative or also a purpose once applied through a product. The detail in the line work also creates a more depth with minimal use of colour, again easier to reproduce and creates a dark feel overall.

-

Crossbreaker

-
Crossbreaker are a hardcore band, who have aesthetically relevant designs that easily relate to the audience and context which they are placed in. Using a black letter styled typeface, alongside photographic and illustrative imagery. Colour does not really play much of an impact throughout the overall identity of the band. Keeping it simple to black and white. Making it easier to manufacture and also easier to relate visually.

Marc Hennes

-
Stumbled across this illustrative piece of work by March Hennes, and instantly felt creeped out by the warped humanoid figured, central to the image. As you can see there is an overlap of illustration combined with a contrast of 3 colours. Defining the expression furthermore. This is an ideal example of the aims of my fishtank brief, utilising space together with strong pieces of imagery.

Rus Khasanov

-
Over the summer I came across Rus Khasanov's work and instantly became impressed. He has an extensive set of skills throughout design which he utilises across all aspects. What I particularly like about his work are his illustrations. Especially the one below, an over-layered doubled up visual which creates a merge of detail. Taking this example I want to somehow capitalise on this process throughout my own practice. Massive influence.

-

Low Bros

-
Massive fan of Low Bros mural, illustration and design work. There symmetry between each piece of illustrative work is spot on. Utilising an geometrical approach, alongside a depth of colour. As you can see the flat, boldness of colour is heavily capitalised with finer details of blending tones to aid each section.
