Greg "Craola" Simkins

√æ√æ√æ√æ√æ√

Abstract, deformed illusions of creatures that have been manipulated from the animal kingdom. I find Craola's work inspiring and highly detailed in execution, the colour, format and application have all been considered and utilised effectively. A use of mix media can be seen across his works, what I particularly like the most is the graffiti piece at the top, as the illustrative manipulated letterforms create an uneasy visual welcome. Nice work indeed.

A Collection of Tour Flyers / Posters

^^^^^^^

Hardcore music is one of my greatest interets. and with that comes design and illustration. A number of different media used on a widespread basis, communication. Relating the events being casted, to the audience through its own sub cultural design reference. What you end up with is an audience that relates perfectly with the design. Aesthetically I find all of the posters below, effective in terms of audience and craft, which has inspired me for a focus to push my own work towards.

Robert Howsare

◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊

A projection focussing on 16mm film incorporating the use of looped image projection and sound. Each of the frames has a different colour, screen printed onto it, allowing a piece of sound to be created as the projector passes over it. Altogether I find this extremely interesting, and aesthetically pleasing to the eye. Although, I cannot clearly identify exactly what images are being projected, the overall feel and motion of the piece creates a fluent atmosphere.

A History of the Sky - murphlab

––– ––– –

I don't really know where to begin with this piece of work. This is a masterpiece. The beauty of the mesmerising flow of the sky, as it changes throughout a period of a year. The context and content have been excellently combined to produce imagery beyond it's original beauty. You can now see a relation between the amount of data collected and the context it has been put in. Film and Motion Graphics. Inspiring to say the least.

Bartholomäus Traubeck - Years

=

" A record player that plays slices of wood. Year ring data is translated into music, 2011.
Modified turntable, computer, vvvv, camera, acrylic glass, veneer, approx. 90x50x50 cm. " - Traubeck

There is a wierdly, morbid atmosphere that I feel has been created throughout this piece. As the wood turns, and the sound plays, slightly creeps me out as it could possibly be the voice of a tree. Not to be stray away from the context too much, but there is a clear indication of an effective use of sound, form and space. A nice project indeed.

Chris Timms - Sensual Objects

-

Sensual Objects is a blog created by Chris Timms, a designer who uses unnatural, kinetic objects to allow a fluent motion of form on various formats. Such as, gif's and videos. There is something oddly unsettling about the motions, as you are exposed to something that is not seen visually on a day to day basis. With that, the colour incorporated throughout his designs are fitting, as the gradient tones create a material aspect to the forms. Allowing you to see it for what it actually is. It fit's the context.

Datamatics

-

A mass world of visual data, created by using mathematic principles to collate information. Then transforming this mass onto a elaborate programme, allowing the viewer to expand in to a world of phenomenon. Each moving piece of type, shape, form and function has been expertly crafted into a projection that allows the audience to visually interact. One of the most appealing pieces of design I have seen recently.

James Jean

-

Wonderful, colourful works by James Dean. His cover work appeals to me the most as I get a emerging impact straight away from the first glance. His subtle detail within his work, forms an elusive bridge between colour and image. Creating a blend of flowing visuals, that allow a more effective impact. Inspiring work indeed.

Alex Gross

-

Although these are paintings, rather than pieces of Graphic Design. The artist still uses some of the same principles throughout his work. The colour is extremely vibrant, almost unworldly as the it adds tremendous depth to the atmosphere. Placing of type, brand and slight advertising all add to the artists desired effect as some of his work could be seen as political in some aspects. Really nice.

IMAGE: Insa X High Rise

-

Insa X High Rise Murals, featured in Birmingham's Custard Factory. There is a clear visual concept behind the shapes used within the architecture to elevate a key focus of modern influence, within a city. The building itself before hand has a reputation for it's nightlife, but by adding a feature to the outside of the building will allow a much more interesting audience that would approach.

IMAGE: Michiel Schuurman

-

Michiel Schuurman is a dutch based designer, focussing primarily on screen printed techniques, colour and vibrant uses of shape. His visuals are outstanding and bold, but also modern within the culture of Amsterdam. Overall I think this is an effective use of shape and colour.

IMAGE: MUNKONE

-

Extremely vibrant pieces of work, created using colour effectively, without the focus being on the linear lines that form the outline. Munkone has got this skill and style down to a tee. You can see a clear sense of graffiti styled character work, infused with more contemporary methods of rendering with colour. Overall the images make quite an impact, and effectively reach the audience in context.

Two forms of beauty intertwined together to create an upmost morbid, unsettling and nerving piece of imagery. The woman's beauty contrasting with the beauty of butterflies and flowers, creates a counter acting balance that essentially cancels each other out. Although saying that, I find these images exceptionally beautiful as the faceless beauty has been personified within another form of context.

IMAGE: Your Rainbow Panorama / Olafur Eliasson

-

Absolutely breath taking piece of architecture. Using a full circle of the colour pallet allowing a fully functional space, where the audience can move through the piece. There is something about this that adds a lot more to the existing building, the fact it is placed on a roof top creates an extension of atmosphere.

IMAGE: Cammile Rose Garcia

-

Wonderful pieces of work by Cammile Rose Garcia. Such an incredible sense of depth, detail and understanding on what the Illusion of the real world can suppress. Underlying a deep sense of value from the cruelties of humanity. Well, at least the belief of myself, my view of her work. A talented lady indeed.

Stumbled across these books made by Allison Wilton. What I particularly enjoy about this piece of work, is the context and format which is placed in side the book itself. The fact the pages fold corresponding positions, clearly justifies a result from extensive research. Clever.

IMAGE: A Brief Pirate Crusade, Jesse McManus

-

Stumbled across this comic book and it is exactly the kind of approach we want to take our own comic to. Using only black Illustration on coloured stock, using a square format. What I particularly like about the comic is the hand drawn, rough appearance and atmosphere created.

Portugese typography, admirable to say the least. I like the way shapes clearly crossover the path of the type. Enabling a flowing movement of Graphic Design. Essentially what you are left with is a politcal piece of work, justifying the artists beliefs behind an idea. Non con-formative.

IMAGE: RGB Colorspace Altas

-

Literally one of the most amazing books I have ever came across. I can't even begin to imagine how much work must have been put into this to create such a masterpiece. The RGB tonal colour space has been crafted to perfection, taking a context out of it's original origin and placing into a new one. Brilliant idea.
